I have had many journals I wrote with one purpose in mind, but some time in the future the meaning of what I had written changed as I had changed. The words were the same, but how they affected me was different and allowed me to access a new perspective.
This is exactly how the idea of creating guided journaling practices came to me. I was procrastinating by reading an old journal of mine, not with any real purpose, just looking back on where I had been in those years. I landed on a page where I was doing writing exercises during the pandemic and in one short moment it felt like my brain had just connected multiple unanswered questions I had about how I can share my unique take on moving through life that felt true to who I am these days.
“Beware of unearned wisdom.”
A big part of my story is feeling disconnected to the practices, whether religious or psychological, that work for other people but don’t do much for me. When taking part in this wonderful human endeavour of self development it's important to speak about experiences I have directly had, not ones I have witnessed others have. This keeps me walking a path of self discovery.
There are infinite ways of doing life. If I only talk about what I have seen or heard from others I don't know what that feels like. It's very easy to talk about things, but without a direct connection to an experience to back it up it's not helpful to anyone, especially myself. In order for this to take me, or you, anywhere it has to come from a deeper place. It's the only sustainable way to feel energized in showing up, or knowing when not to show up.
Quarterly Updates. This newsletter started under a different name, “Of No Fixed Address”. It was meant to be four updates a year after being forced out of my home and leaving the country. It was a small thing that helped ground me in a time when nothing was certain, but has now in less than a year evolved into something more.
While my life is still relatively unrooted, “Write Now”, is naturally asking me to not just write more, but share more. I will continue to share quarterly personal updates, but between those updates you can expect monthly updates for online writing workshops.
Each month I will be creating and hosting a Writing Workshop. These workshops will be online group sessions where I will share a writing method, prompt or other writing related practice I have found useful in my personal journey. These are a work in progress so I can’t share exact details in this email, so stick around if you’d like to take part in what’s coming next!
I will end by saying this; enjoy what I share to the degree it feels right. Most of my work is dealing with our subconscious layers, and part of that work is to know how to apply pressure and effort, and when take your foot off the gas and see where you go.
