The ground shook again, harder this time. Waves crashed against the rocks. Ragnar grabbed Aleksandr to keep him upright. A second tremor rolled through the air. Hale felt it in his teeth and bones, and in the scar on his chest. Sterling hunched forward and bared his teeth, snarling. His eyes were wide and wild with an anger Hale had never seen on his face.
“What the fuck did you do, Vik?” Sterling snapped.
It took a second to realize that the breathy sound Viktor was making was a laugh. Loose strands of hair stuck to his face.
“I have been promising Jörmungandr, haven’t I? Had to make it all worth it somehow.”
“Make what worth—”
Sterling didn’t have a chance to finish his sentence.
The ground gave one more heave before the earth split open. Frozen earth, rocks, and chunks of ice flew everywhere. Hale grabbed Sterling’s wrist to pull Sterling behind him. Mjölnir burned in his free hand. The pendant morphed and extended into the very familiar weight of the Blood Moon Explorer. He used the body of the guitar to shield himself from the debris as the Midgard Serpent emerged from the strait.
This is such a bittersweet moment for me. Hale, Aleksandr, Sterling and I have been through a lot together. I put a lot of love into these characters, even as I put them through literal Hel. I want to thank every single one of you for coming on this journey with me.
