Amie Newman · This Is Not Your Mother's Eating Disorder

I am excited to announce that I am opening up submissions to the anthology to include a diverse set of expressions. If you’re a poet, or a journalist, or a visual artist (cartoonist? graphic novelist?), please consider submitting to the anthology I am editing about midlife women’s experiences with eating disorders.

Submit to the anthology

Tell us (or show us!) about the experiences in your adult life that contributed to the resurgence of an eating disorder or being an adult and experiencing an eating disorder for the first time. Write a letter to your eating disorder…or from your eating disorder…or to your child, partner, friends, or parents about your eating disorder. Share a hilarious, embarrassing, or shocking revelation while engaged in eating disorder behavior. Express any of these ideas through visual art. Create a self-portrait to represent the multiple aspects of yourself. Draw your eating disorder. Illustrate a comic or cartoon that outlines a piece of your story or a scene from your eating disorder experiences you want to share

What was the moment that finally compelled you to seek help or forced you into treatment?

  • Write about or draw the moment you knew you were in trouble or when you knew you would finally be okay.

  • Share how your race or your gender identity shows up in your eating disorder or recovery.

  • Tell us or show us what your eating disorder looks like today, and about your eating disorder as a teenager or young adult, and how they are similar or different.

  • Write about or express through visual art the trying and failing and the shame or the pride in your rocky path.

Let your anger, your pride, your sorrow, your joy, your uncertainty, your guilt spill onto the page. Your story or art might devastate us, amuse us, surprise us, or feel all too familiar. It might make us squirm, shed tears, seethe with fury, feel understood, pick up a guitar, or take to the streets. Write the story or poem that has been weighing on you, or draw what it looks or feels like, and release what you have been holding. Tell us the truth and know that your story, however you express it, is needed right now.

Submission information and guidelines can be found here.
