Course Description
On the morning of 15 August 1947, when Jawaharlal Nehru, the heir to Mahatma Gandhi, the Buddha, and the European Enlightenment, raised the Indian Tricolor flag on the ramparts of the Red Fort, the seventeenth-century palace of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, India was born again—free to experiment with freedom. Since Independence, the country has gradually evolved from Nehru’s democratic socialism to Narendra Modi’s democratic, entrepreneurial, and digital India, addressing its internal contradictions by playing the game of democracy, and in the process, becoming the fourth-largest global economy. And with the spacecraft Chandrayaan exploring the Moon and beyond, a space nation with a billion dreams is on the rise.

By the end of this four-day seminar, participants will have gained a comprehensive understanding of the history of modern India and its evolution into a global technological powerhouse, working in partnership with the West, nonetheless, maintaining its strategic autonomy. Moreover, during the course, participants will have brief glimpses of India’s culture, dance, music, and architecture.

This course will combine lecture with class discussion.
