Transfer quarterback contenders of 2026: Part I, ACC and Big Ten

The last few college football titles have been totally dominated by transfer quarterbacks.1

This was entirely predictable when you consider the nature of the position or examine the impact a single-elimination playoff has on winners and losers in the NFL. The winners are teams who have a precise quarterback who can execute a winning strategy against intense game planning.

Here’s a summation of this decade so far and the quarterbacks who played for titles.2

There is a massive trend towards older upperclassmen and typically ones that had starting experience before joining the program they took to the title game.

Even Stetson Bennett played major snaps at Jones College before rejoining the Dawgs, Mac Jones was a fourth-year player who’d been thrown into the fire at the end of 2019 when Tua Tagovailoa was hurt, and McCarthy had played in both 2021 and 2022. Our last two champions, Will Howard and Fernando Mendoza, were multi-year starters at other schools before coming to the Big Ten.
