I’m firmly of the belief that great play in the secondary will make a defense. It’s hard to be elite without a great D-line, but you can be good to great without one. If you are bad in the secondary, the D-line doesn’t matter.
Especially in a game like Pop Warner 5th-grade ball, where bad tackling and mistakes can lead to points that are the difference between winning and losing. Right now, the best hope for our squad is that we:
Don’t commit turnovers (just gonna run the dang ball).
Hit explosive runs now and again with our speed.
Are difficult to score against.
Basically your traditional formula of defense + run game. But playing great defense will hinge on the development of the secondary, which I’m overseeing with a lot of help from another coach.
Fall camp for the B-team secondary after we broke up into two squads started off pretty well, quickly cratered, and is now looking up again. I’m starting to see the possibility that we could be very good in the secondary.
