News Labeling Project

This month I’ve been working on a somewhat unusual project! I’ve been asked to help with design for an experiment that tests whether or not labels that disclose research methodologies on new articles increase reader trust. No pics or details since it’s very much in the works!

Perennial Font

Lowercase letters are in editing mode! This month I finished a first draft of the lowercase letters for the font I started in class. Since my teacher, the wonderful Libbie Bischoff, was gracious enough to tell us to email for feedback, I sent it off and now have a bunch of changes to make. Here’s to spending April editing and adding more special characters!

Sunrise Collage Piece

I haven’t started actually collaging anything on this. But I have been somewhat collecting newspapers for it! And by collecting I mean I’ve got some newspapers from a neighbor, some from my friend, and way too many from a temporary subscription to the New York Times which I’ve now canceled.

This month I haven’t finished much design work aside from some social media ads that are under NDA.

“You have it all”

I crossed off an item on my 2026 bingo card and wrote a song! It’s been a very long time since I’ve written any sort of music that wasn’t a jingle for my cat and it was good to get back into an old hobby. I was able to finish this work with the push of a writing workshop. More on that below!

Watching

I’ve been in such a film mood lately that my letterboxed for the month is full of short films, including all 5 Oscar-nominated animated shorts. My favorites of the 5 were surprisingly not the winner (Although I did really enjoy “The Girl Who Cried Pearls”!). They were “Retirement Plan” and “Butterfly” (Papillon).

I also watched Hundreds of Beavers, a delightful movie that can be described as Charlie Chaplin and Bugs Bunny meet video game play-through.

Reading

Yaga, Kat Sandler

I’ve decided I’m in my play reading era, starting with this play that’s a modern, feminist twist on Baba Yaga folklore. I really enjoyed this fast paced read! Hoping to read more plays next month.

The Politics of Design, Ruben Pater

I finally finished this one that I started in February. It’s a really interesting survey of how design, culture, and politics all shape each other. One example that I found poignant and relevant in our current age of misinformation is how easily graphs can be manipulated in order to affect opinion. I think it’s one of those things that I’ve known to be true subconsciously, but seeing the concrete examples was still interesting and illuminating.

Katherine Small Gallery

At the beginning of the month, I visited friends, clients, and colleagues from my past life in Boston. I was able to stop by the Katherine Small Gallery while there. It’s a cozy space where you can take a look at pieces of graphic design and typography and peruse through books.

Keepsake House Writing Workshop

This month I flexed some different creative muscles by going to a writer’s workshop run by Keepsake House. I may be biased since I’m on the board of this org but it was a lovely, intimate experience that gave me the time and space to try writing as a change of pace. We were given prompts related to the theme of “Inner Child” and shared our work for feedback. I chose to write about the joys of doing things as an adult that I didn’t get to do as a child!

It’s turtle race season! For those who don’t know, I volunteer at a turtle rescue and we put on a charity turtle race every year. The race will be at the end of June and planning has just started so I’ll be doing a new poster and a couple of merch pieces for them this upcoming month.
