The Blackmere Podcast has been living on Substack since launch, and it’s not going anywhere. But I know how it works. You open Spotify when you want something to listen to. You open Substack when you want something to read. Podcasts don’t always come to mind when you’re scrolling through essays and fiction, and I don’t blame you for that. I forget to check for podcasts there, too.

The first four episodes walk through the Black Death, not as a history lesson but as a horror story. The collapse of medieval society, the flagellants, the plague doctors, the villages that went silent one house at a time. From there, we’ve gone to Hadrian’s Wall and the edge of Roman Britain, where the empire ended and the darkness began. We’ve stood in a Puritan parsonage in Salem in 1692, watching a nine-year-old girl crack an egg into a glass of water and set off one of the most infamous episodes of mass hysteria in American history. We’ve followed Jack the Ripper through the autumn fog of Whitechapel. We’ve watched hundreds of people in 1518 Strasbourg dance until their feet bled and their hearts gave out, and no one could explain why.
We’ve walked the Grand Trunk Road with the Thuggee, the real ones, not the movie version. We’ve stood at the bedside of patients locked inside their own bodies by a disease that killed half a million people and then vanished without explanation. We’ve gone inside the Tower of London with two princes who were seen less and less through the summer of 1483, and then not at all. We’ve traced Ebola from a single unsterilized needle in a mission hospital in Zaire to a virus that weaponizes human compassion itself. And in the most recent episode, we watched a doctor tap an ice pick through a woman’s eye socket, call it medicine, and send her home in a taxi.
