Three weeks ago, after returning from Portugal, I heard words I hadn’t expected to hear: “Bone on bone.”
My left leg and hip had been giving me pain, as you know, throughout the trip. Walking the beautiful cobblestone streets of Portugal had become increasingly painful, though I didn’t yet know why. Now I knew.
A hip replacement lay ahead, most likely.
I won’t pretend I greeted the news with joy. My first response was the same one many of us have when life suddenly changes direction.
“Oh, shit.”
