These are photos of the security training I wrote about in Part 2. I do not own any guns or firearms, but I know how to use them. I had taken the “Crash and Bang” course before I went to Bogota, Colombia in the late 80’s. At that time, the course was focused on evasive driving, bomb detection, how to fire a firearm (strictly handguns) and how to survive (hopefully) a kidnapping. The training I took before going to Baghdad had no evasive driving as we weren’t allowed to drive there, and focused on weapons and bombs. PLUS both trainings included mass casualty response/emergency medical first aid (not shown here).
A fake rocket launcher; on the table in front of me are fake IED (Improvised Explosive Devices).
A real detonator for a car bomb we set off.
We blew up an actual car
After the car bomb
12-gauge shotgun
AK-47. Note that we were closely supervised when using these weapons
M-6 (I remember liking this one)
9 mm Sig Sauer
I left training feeling slightly more informed, but still realistically knew I would never be an expert.
Stay tuned for Part 3 - Getting There
