Rather than appealing to primal powers or deities, you blend with them. You merge your consciousness into theirs and see the world through their eyes.
As the Full Moon in Pisces approaches, I think of how Pisces is the sign of the fish, and how fish do not exist without oceans and rivers; they are one.
In the folk animism we practice here at Mystery Cult, our aim is less towards self-help and more towards collective thriving. When we merge, we merge with the sea, the kelp, the manta rays, the jet stream, the tinkling sand. We remember that we are already one.
What does it mean to merge with the ocean at a time when sea temperatures are hotter than they’ve been in 120,000 years?
I think back to the reading we did a few months ago of Sunaura Taylor’s book Disabled Ecologies, where one of her central questions is:
how do we honor land that doesn’t conform to idealized standards of ‘pristine’ nature, and uphold our duty to care for ecosystems that have been deliberately disabled?
Caring for our world through ritual is one of the primary concerns of the contemporary witch, IMO.
In paganism and witchcraft, the gods need us as much as we need them. The ocean is a god, She needs us. Ritual is one way to offer her care.
