Workshops and Courses:
The next Gather Online Creative Writing Workshop is tomorrow evening (4 June) between 6.30pm-8.30pm. The theme for the session is birds and there’ll be a range of prompts to inspire your writing as well as the opportunity to share your work (if you want to). Tickets are £14 – email me to book.
A reminder that I’ll be at the Tyne Theatre and Opera House in Newcastle on Monday 6 July between 10.30am-12.30pm to run a writing workshop inspired by the history of this beautiful and atmospheric building. My monthly Time to Write workshops at Koru Pizza are now running at the earlier time of 10am-12pm (while the restaurant is shut to the public). The next session is on 28 June and tickets are £20 (email me to book).
Don’t forget my next masterclass workshop at The Biscuit Factory Gallery in Newcastle is on Thursday 11 June between 10.30am-1pm. The workshop is about Flash Fiction, but please note this will feature the same content as my previous Flash Fiction workshop at the Gallery in October 2024 so don’t book if you’ve been to this before!
If you’d like to focus on short story writing this Autumn, I’m running a Write a Short Story in Five Weeks course at the Biscuit Factory on Thursday mornings between 10 September-8 October. This is a practical course which aims to get you writing and – crucially – finishing a complete short story. As with all my workshops and courses, you’ll get detailed handouts at every session with written instructions for all tasks and additional prompts and information to help you make progress afterwards – including on where and how to submit your finished story for publication. It costs £180 and you can book through the Biscuit Factory using the highlighted link above.
I’ll also be doing a drop-in mini memoir session at the Biscuit Factory on 5 July as part of the Ouseburn Festival. It’s not on their website yet, but keep an eye out for details when the festival programme goes live shortly.
Writing Competitions and Calls:
Carnyx Press publish strange and lyrical fantasy, horror, and science fiction. They’re currently looking for short stories (2,000-8,000 words) from writers from the North of England for an anthology of writing on the theme of sorcery. No fee. Deadline: 31 July.
The Welkin Genre Prize is for micro-fiction of up to 100 words that aims to celebrate writing around different genres and themes. No fee. Deadline: 3pm on 30 June.
Southlands Arts Centre Creative Writing Prize is open for fiction and life writing of up to 2,000 words. The theme for the fiction category is architecture. Entry fees: £3 for a single submission, £5 to submit to both fiction and life writing categories. Deadline: 31 July.
The Queen Mary Wasafiri New Writing Prize is for writers who have not yet published a book-length book. Submit up to 3,000 words of fiction, life writing or poetry (up to three poems). Entry fees: £12 for a single entry, £16 for a double entry and £6 for a single subsidised entry. Deadline: 30 June.
The Astley Prize short-story writing competition is open for short stories of up to 5,000 words inspired by the theme a sense of a place. Entry fees: £12 per story, £5 for any subsequent stories. Deadline: 30 June.
