Amanda Roberts · Come Back Soon

I started this project because, after 13+ years of working across brands, agencies, nonprofits, and startups, I’ve seen one truth hold steady: great marketing isn’t just about shiny tools; it’s about human connection.

I’ve led big-budget campaigns for household names, helped scrappy startups find their voice, and guided arts organizations through moments of deep transition. Across all of it, I’ve consistently seen one thing move people to action: a recommendation from someone they trust.

That’s why I’m here. To talk about the kind of marketing that doesn’t just chase trends, but actually works—and feels good to make.

Referred customers are 37% more loyal and stick around longer.

Recently, I asked someone in tech a deceptively simple question:
“How do you define marketing?”

The answer? A bunch of buzzwords and a funnel.
Aka: a non-answer.

It confirmed a hunch I’ve had for a while—marketing has gotten so big, so bloated, that we’ve lost sight of its core purpose:

Connecting with the humans who buy your product or service in a human-centric way.

In my experience—and the research backs this up—word of mouth is still the best bet:

  • 92% of people trust recommendations from friends and family over ads
    (Forbes, Forwardly)

  • It drives 5x more sales than paid ads and fuels $6 trillion in annual spend
    (WiserNotify)

  • Referred customers are 37% more loyal and stick around longer
    (Newsfile)

In short: people trust people. Always have. Still do.

Real relationships make us healthier, happier, and more resilient.

Connection is currency.

We’re not just looking for good recommendations, we’re looking for real connections.

There’s a reason Zuck wants to force upon give us all AI best friends. He’s tapping into a primal, biological truth:
We are wired to connect.

But let’s be honest—what we actually crave is someone real who sees us, hears us, and says, “I get it.”

And science agrees:

“Just like hunger and thirst are signals that we need food and water, loneliness signals that we need connection. And this signal is rooted deep within our brain.”
The Social Creatures

Real relationships don’t just feel good—they make us healthier, happier, and more resilient (World Happiness Report 2025).

That’s why we’re seeing the rise of phone-free gatherings, community-focused events, and spaces built to help people reconnect IRL (Wired).

The takeaway? Connection is currency.

And your brand—yes, yours—has the power to build it.

Before you fire up Canva or post another Reel, I recommend backing up.
Take a breath. Then ask yourself:

  • What’s your mission, vision, and reason for existing?

  • Who are you trying to reach... and why should they care?

  • What actually makes you different from the rest?

  • And how can you communicate that consistently, like a living, breathing thing? (Newsflash: brands are powered by humans behind the scenes.)

When you know the answers to these questions, marketing gets way less messy.

You stop chasing platforms. You stop sounding like everyone else.

And you start building something people remember—and return to.

This first post is a good snapshot of what you’ll find here:

  • Marketing that builds trust and earns loyalty

  • Brands and creatives who are doing it right (and wrong)

  • Tools to help you clarify your message and grow without the burnout

Whether you're a founder trying to grow without selling your soul, a nonprofit reconnecting with your community, or just someone tired of marketing that feels hollow, I'm glad you're here.

I’ll be sharing frameworks, prompts, and behind-the-scenes lessons I’ve learned from building brands that last. And yes, sometimes I’ll share resources and downloads (like my DIY Brand Guide). But this isn’t a pitch parade.

It’s a space to reconnect with the why so you can show up with more clarity, intention, and impact.

Thanks for visiting. Come back soon 👋

I’m Amanda Roberts, a brand strategist, marketing consultant, and recovering overthinker. I’ve led campaigns for household names, repositioned scrappy startups, and helped nonprofits find their voice in the chaos. I created Come Back Soon to demystify marketing and reconnect it to what really matters: people.

In the spirit of transparency: I use AI to help shape and refine my words, but every idea originates from me. Outlines, drafts, messy notes, and late-night voice memos included. It felt important—and ethical—to say that out loud. (Yes, I chose to use those emdashes!)

When I’m not nerding out over brand voice or community strategy, you can find me reading, hiking, or dreaming up my next weird little art project.
