Colorism from my Black Sisters

At the end of the class, someone asked about the Hoodoo class. This, what I’m about to tell you, is still bothering me: She asked who was teaching the Hoodoo course. I said that I was. She wrote “lol how does that work?”

Now, no other course that I said that I was teaching was met with the same kind of question.

It’s because I’m white presenting. Even though I just taught about cultural appropriation, that I am the one that teaches the African Diasporic classes, and listed all of my qualifications…

My qualifications were not up for questioning. She didn’t bother to ask me to reiterate. It’s because I’m white.

Now, let me be very clear that my race is white but my ethnicity is not. I am white presenting but I am black.

Someone who is black but not educated in hoodoo gets more clout than a white presenting Black man who is an expert.

It bothers me. A lot. I can’t…
