Busy Life Requires Rest

Althea Damgaard · An Abundant Life

I’m thankful for all the great opportunities God has given me in my life. However, I have to keep the balance of the writing life with everything else. A lot happened in May to the point I did not have the power to figure out a post for this blog on Memorial Day, not even a simple one about the holiday.

My writing life proved as much time into business as writing. June looks no different for how time will split between the fun of writing and the contemplation of marketing. You can read more about that over on my other Substack, Tales of Karnum and Beyond, in May’s Monthly Wrap Up.

My husband already has respiratory problems and wound up with something hitting him pretty hard earlier in May. It took antibiotics and a steroid to knock it out of him. Cold meds didn’t cut it entirely. He’s the same age as my mother, who had me fairly young. My parents aren’t in the best of health either. The crazy thing is that my 93-year-old grandmother is doing better than my parents, though she is slowing down a lot. All the various health issues have me glad I’m still living close to everyone, but it is still harder to deal with. I’m not in the best of health either, having to sort out how to not exhaust myself because of multiple sclerosis. I’m definitely praying for all of my family’s health because I know God will work things through. Sometimes it is immediate and sometimes it is learning how to rely on Him despite how things flow in this fallen world.

Life can feel quite stressful and overwhelming some days. Sometimes for multiple days. What we must remember to do is find rest amid everything. The world will not end if we have to postpone something, skip a week in posting, or block out some time as a vacation, even if you stay home. When you work for yourself, it can be all too easy to keep pushing to achieve things quicker. Our bodies need time to rest and reconnect with God so we feel properly grounded and energized for the next project God gives us, or the unexpected this world is great at throwing our way.

Jesus tells the weary and heavy burdened to come and rest with Him. We all should take some time daily to commune with Him, not just Sunday. He made our bodies and they tell us when it is time to rest and we should pay attention to that. Even easy physical weeks might seem hard because the brain is overtaxed and needs time with God.

Are you feeling rundown in any way? Have you kept time daily with God and His word? Taken time to hangout with family and friends? Be sure to have time each day for these, but you may need to take a vacation, not a busy go somewhere kind of thing or a staycation to do work around the house. Check out your summer plans and make sure there is time to rejuvenate with the rest you truly need. Maybe include a word study about how the Bible talks about rest.
