I get asked for the details on how I built my house and the new Alpine luddites shop. some suggested I sell my house plans that I drew. I will attempt to describe the details, thought process and materials used. Keep in mind just because I built in a certain way doesn’t make “the right way” or the “wrong way”. it’s my fucken way.
guiding principles:
do it myself
it doesn’t have to be fun to be fun
use local materials
hire local subcontractors
use little petroleum as possible:no closed cell foam or spray foam
keep it non toxic as possible. no pvc, vinyl, carpet, glue, sealants, caulk, commercial paint etc.
prevent damage from moisture
build above grade
don’t cut corners
no materials made of wood chips and glue; OSB, Zip panels, TGI joists,
no roof trusses
no asphalt/fiberglass shingles
focus on air sealing but don’t lose my mind over it
build a house to last 200 years
be flexible
simple shapes
simple rooflines
structural engineering above code. weather will change. winds will get stronger, precipitation patterns will change. winters can get colder, summers hotter and wetter.
house can be heated, food cooked, vented without power
make use of natural daylight
good ventilation
stay on budget
time is money when your self employed
be willing to compromise
first thought ,best thought design principle
