Heyo!
Mentorship is a fantastic thing. Whether it’s a family member, coworker, friend, or teacher, having someone to look out for you and share knowledge is enormously comforting. This year, our four Jesse Cox Audio Fellows have been mentored through the creation of a feature-length audio story, three of which we’ve published over the last month. From endangered animals, to mental health, and long-distance relationships, these stories are ambitious and engaging, be sure to listen to them.
We’re also excited to have opened applications for next year’s intake! This is a wonderful opportunity and I encourage you to consider applying for it — there’s more info on how to do this below.
We also had an intergenerational All The Best moment earlier this month at our 15th birthday party, where people involved with the past and present of the show came along to celebrate it as well as the legacy of our cofounder Jesse Cox. This month’s contestant is the native thyme bush that is absolutely thriving in the courtyard. My partner has been putting in the hard yards keeping it watered, and it’s endured some scorching days and tempestuous rain with aplomb. Apparently it’ll grow purple flowers at some point!

From Sue’s years of digging pitfall traps in the desert to becoming the world Dunnart expert, their conversation explores Australia’s fragile biodiversity, the politics of conservation, and the search for something in the unknown.

Ben suffers from depression after knee surgery. Searching for ways to heal online, he finds himself trapped in toxic ideas of masculinity. It’s only when a friend takes him to his breathwork class that he finally breaks down and begins to heal.
Sometimes, not all healing comes with words.
Sometimes it’s in the silence between breaths, in the rise and fall of your chest, as the world eases and the universe reminds you: you’re safe.

#663 - Frightful: Halloween. Not a trick, but a treat of three haunting stories that might just keep you up at night.
First up, its not just an apartment you have to worry about, but even a blog or a reddit thread can be a haunted space. Then, be wary of those recurring stains that seem to defy explanation.
Finally, driving in big cities can be pain. Sydney is not exception. If you drive, or have driven in Sydney then you can probably relate with having to deal with confusing street signs, but this story takes a bit of a diabolical turn.
Following on from our first iteration of live audiovisual storytelling, step into ANOTHER evening where the smallest moments take centre stage.
Presented by All The Best and Read To Me, (Extra)ordinary Tales #2 is a storytelling night that brings together audio and visual artists to explore the magic, humour, heartbreak and mystery hidden in everyday life.
Read To Me is a community of visual storytellers where illustrators and writers share the stage.
The event is FREE and is happening at Green Square Library, from 7:30pm on Friday November 14.
We’re excited to announce to relaunch of the Jesse Cox Audio Fellowship (JCAF) for emerging storymakers. This is an opportunity for four upcoming audio artists with a connection to Australia to accelerate their audio career.
Each fellow will receive $1000AUD to create an ambitious feature length audio story, 1:1 mentorship, workshops on audiocraft and a national broadcast outcome.

In partership with WestWords Western Sydney Centre for Writing, All The Best is cohosting a listening party on November 10 to celebrate the writers and producers of this year’s fbi.radio/All The Best x WestWords program.
Each of this year’s works will be showcased at the listening party, and there will be free finger food and drinks.
Bring along your friends and family. Just a 4-minute walk from Parramatta train station.
Asphalt Words and Ocean Dreams (or Asphalt for short) is part open mic, part writing circle, and entirely a good time.
Poets of all experience levels are invited to hone their skills. Each performer gets three minutes at the mic to share their own work or another’s, and after intermission, it turns into one of a myriad of exercises. This month, on the tail end of a very wonderful workshop, we will have a free workshop/poetry reading session. Bring a book you would like to share, or get ready to write a poem based on a number of exercises! If you don’t have a book, we’ll have some on hand too.
The next session is happening on November 27 from 7pm at Hopsters Co-op Brewery in Newtown.
