People talk about creative block, but they don’t talk about this other kind of block where you have a lot of creative ideas and can’t figure out how to actually make any of them happen. In this video, artist Shuaitong Zong talks about how she uses underthinking as a tool to put her ideas into motion. She says that “underthinking isn’t chaos, it’s just removing everything that stands in between the idea and the work.” I think that this is an essential skill to have as an artist.
I’ve been in a rut lately, overthinking a lot of my ideas into a grave. I’ll have an idea, and then I’ll spiral into all of the potential positive and negative outcomes. I’ll overwhelm myself getting ten steps ahead of things.
