I see death at the backyard fence,

waving me over.

I place a hand on my heart and bow—

“I’ll walk willingly with you,

but will you gift me one more second? just one.”

“Just one,” he agrees

Like even he wants to see the way

I’ll spend my last second.

I slip back inside,

and grab your hands

Silently pulling you

into a dance

beneath the open sky

Call it the writer in me

but i always feel a story ending

before the final period

is blotted on a page.

I breathe you in,

your hand on my waist

like a violin

play me one last time,

I want to say

The strings quiver

Drawing tears at the sound.

One last dance

we’re twirling now—

you laugh

like you can’t help it,

Like you’re finally bowing

to your own joy.

You still don’t know it’s the end.

I let you spin me slow,

like we have endless pages ahead.

I smile at the way your presence

rewrote every tragedy in my bones.

The dance is ending.

I kiss you to leave a trace

That even Death would envy

For this last second,

for every second,

I would have danced with you.
