Welcome to Roll Call, a series where I revisit film rolls I’ve shot over the years and reflect on what they taught me. Some are gems, some are disasters, and plenty fall somewhere in between.
We may be well into July, but I just picked up my main roll of film I shot across May and June, and it’s time to dive into it.
My first week back at work I was off on a three day shoot in Montauk. I was so excited to finally get to take my mom on one of my work trips. Not only was it a chance for us to get a quick vacation in together, but she got to see me do what I love and now understands my job a bit more.
The following week, I was off to Laguna Beach for a work retreat for our social team. It was a four day venture that was filled with quality time with my long-distance coworkers (ladies, if you’re reading this, I miss you already).
LA was a quick layover before heading back to New York. I had an evening to myself, so I went over to Abbot Kinney and walked to Venice Beach. I had dinner at Gjelina, picked up a Lil Sweet Treat, and turned in for the night before my jet lag caught up with me.
Last, but certainly not least, I have the early days of June back in New York. I was welcomed home with a sunny park picnic with friends and then captured a proposal on Gothic Bridge near the Reservoir to round out the roll.
This roll was such a delight - of course there were a few throwaways (below) but for the most part, these 36 frames really captured the essence of the start to my summer.
I’m slowly learning that indoor film photography isn’t my strong suit — it doesn’t play well with my penchant for Kodak Gold. This month I've loaded a roll of Portra 400, so we'll see how that develops in the next one.
