Writing Communities for Ideas, Camaraderie, Support, and Cohorts

Drafting season is here, as I call it, and it always reminds me of how lonely writing can be. Hours disappear while I’m holed up in my room, typing away, while my family goes about their lives. Worth it? Sure. But it’s also isolating. So what pulls me back from the void and back into humanity?

Community.

When I’m stuck on prose, plummeting in plot holes, or questioning if I’ve completely misunderstood the chaos that is self-publishing, I lean on my writing communities. Discord chats, Instagram accountability, YouTube sprint streams—you name it. What started as looking for self-pub answers turned into sprints, friendships, and eventually stumbling into S.D. Huston and the AuthorTube Writing Conference.

Honestly, I wouldn’t have published my first book without these groups. They’ve cheered me through the wins, shoved me forward when I stalled, and reminded me that while writing feels lonely, being a writer doesn’t have to be.

Over the next few months, I’ll be highlighting some of these amazing communities that got me through and still keep me sane. And I’d love to hear from you—what community (or communities) do you hang out in the most?

Because at the end of the day, a writer without a community is a lonely world—
and trust me, even the void has better things to do than be your beta reader.
