Hi! I'm Julia Scott, the owner of Evenstar Books, and prettifier of pages. When I'm not formatting books, I'm busy crafting enchanting science fiction and fantasy novels. My stories are a wild ride of twisty plots, heart-fluttering romance, and all the mind-bending possibilities the universe has to offer. I'm based in Essex, England, where I juggle my writing career with raising and home educating my two teens.
My love for spinning beautiful tales naturally flows into my formatting work – I bring the same spark of creativity and eagle-eyed attention to detail to every project I take on. It's all about making those pages as captivating as the stories they hold!
In your experience, what qualities make a professional book formatter versus a book formatting software?
Professional book formatters have an eye for design, bringing cohesion with the book cover, and can spot formatting mistakes. We know the best ways to make a book interior a pleasure to read. There are plenty of plug-and-play software options that will 'do the job', but you still need to know what makes a book interior great to make the most of them.
What challenges do you face or foresee for Book Formatters with the current growth of AI formatting tools in the writing industry?
I don't think book formatters will be replaced by AI services, so I don't see any challenge there.
What is your book formatting process?
I find out about the books genre and vibe from the author, along with relevant symbols and themes and ask them about their preferences and ideas. Then I make them come alive! I use stock images or I can work with illustrators to bring a design together that works in harmony with the book cover. I use Adobe InDesign in my process of making physical books, and also create an ebook that matches.
What are your interests and hobbies outside book formatting?
I'm a scifi/fantasy author, I read, I sing, I game, I garden 📚🎵💻🌷
