Back at my desk, I ignore everyone and go straight to the second drawer where I keep my business cards, plus an extra toothbrush and toothpaste.

The box is gone.

I check the top drawer. Nothing.

Now I’m panicking. I open the file cabinet. Not there either.

I scan the surface of my desk, hoping it magically appears. Still nothing.

I drop to my knees and check under my desk, even though I know what’s down there: backup shoes for going out after work.

The business card box is nowhere to be found.

I am scanning my brain to make sense of this. I keep a bunch of business cards in my wallet so I have them handy when I am out on market appointments. I haven’t had to restock my wallet in a few weeks, so therefore I haven’t needed to go back into the box.

Was it empty?

Did I throw it out?

I don’t think so. I would remember.

Also, if it was empty, I would have immediately placed a new order…

A new order.

Wait.

My stomach drops.

Oh no.
