I once told a writing group that Mary Oliver was my favorite poet. This was not the right answer to the question in that room, but it was, and still is, true. Mary was a genius, a queer woman, a brilliant, kind, weird, introverted woman. And I believe her secret power was to make it all seem easy, when it was not.
My favorite poets are able to do this, to speak in a voice that feels like a friend who is connected to an electric current of knowing.
Chen Chen does this with humor and unexpected juxtaposition of simplicity and depth. Erin Beleiu makes you feel like you’re coworkers having drinks together after a long shift. James Tate is your neurotic neighbor down the street who keeps you at the mailbox too long while he tells you about his cousin’s new car.
I want to be one of these poets, who speaks in a voice so entirely their own that you never question where it came from. It came from them.
In this two-hour generative workshop, we’ll look at how poets create intimacy and surprise, and move through writing prompts designed to help you trust your instincts and sound more like yourself.
