It is August and the new school year will begin in 3 weeks.

I am 1/4 of the way through age 45. The time just races by these days.

Things are so beautiful in my world right now.
I am afraid to mention it for fear the noticing will awaken the tragedy monster
that loves to visit me when I finally feel at ease.

Listen, I know the world is heating up
and that bad, bad people run the governments of the largest, most violent countries.

I do not forget the terror I should be in,
but can I have this day to be oblivious?
Can I pretend I don’t know anything but what I see around me?

The street overrun with vines
and overgrown trees,
the bees happily buzzing in the tiger lilies,
the dog pant-smiling as he drinks from the watering can,
my child, bright and beautiful, talking to his friend on the phone for 2 hours,

the neighbors who offer free bouquets from their garden,
the birds taking turns at the feeder,
the cat stretched fully open on the hardwood floor,
my husband reading on the couch,
the dining room table piled high with board games and summer homework.

My body feels like mine and everyone I love is still alive and well for now.

May this simple noticing be a prayer for the world;
I love you. I love you.
Thank you. Thank you.
