The refrain that social media isn’t social anymore is getting louder, both online and in real life. This risk of retrotopia, to borrow Zygmunt Bauman’s idea, has always worried me: a nostalgia that encourages withdrawal from the public sphere, a comfortable screen behind which everyone can mythologize their own digital past. What we should be doing is precisely the opposite: not mourning social networks, but imagining their renaissance.

Globally, Meta may have lost 20 million “family daily active users” (DAP) in the first quarter of 2026, but that is a drop in the ocean compared with the 3.56 billion DAP active in March 2026. Above all, Meta does not represent all social networks, and Meta’s obsession is now largely focused on new sources of revenue through AI.
