Overall, my time on ACS was positive. The unfortunate ending has not colored the whole experience. That being said, I do have some regrets.
To be honest, I have regrets covering all of my years on this earth, which at this point are many. I long to be one of those no regrets kinda people, whom I deep down suspect are maybe kinda dumb, but it’s just not in the cards for me.
Speaking of longing to be a different kind of person, I recently sat through the lengthiest dance recital in the world. My son was performing two numbers, one in the 10am recital which was two-and-a-half hours long and one in the 2:30pm recital which was also two-and-a-half-hours long.
We got there 30 mins before show time which was about an hour late since the parents started lining up super early and we had to park three towns over.
I was already annoyed before I even got there.
Also everyone had bouquets of flowers and I always think I should do something like this but I never get my shit together enough to do it so I was not only annoyed but I felt guilty over my inability to be a bouquet kinda parent.
Anyway, Elliot was performing after the intermission in both shows so I had to sit in a theater which smelled like feet and watch like 33 dance numbers before I saw my kid. I am barely exaggerating.
“I am sitting in this theater next to my husband whom I love, about to watch my child perform something he’s been working on for months. I wasn’t even sure I would be able to have children and here we are. Here he is.
“We are surrounded by decent people, this is a community event, and this is a good life. We are fortunate.
“What if I had a positive attitude about it instead of wanting to scratch my skin off?”
I tried and was able to maintain said positive attitude for maybe 40 seconds before I became annoyed again.
Anyway, here are some of my ACS regrets:
Not trusting my gut
As someone who worked in that particular high-pressure environment, I felt in my gut there were certain rules you were expected to observe. One of them was that
