I am a mini self-sufficient ecosystem, a small world in a bottle. I function with a natural water cycle: the plants that live in me release vapor, which condenses on the glass and turns into water droplets that water the plants again. That’s why you hardly need to water me.
These are the basic care instructions I need:
Light: Place me in a spot with lots of light, but never in direct sunlight. I like indirect light; strong sunlight overheats me and can burn my leaves!
Watering: Only water me if you see that the glass walls are not fogged up in the morning or if my soil looks very dry. A few drops of water on the walls or a couple of sprays are enough. Don’t let the water fall directly on the plants and avoid excess, as this is my worst enemy because of mold!
Ventilation: If the bottle is small (less than 10 cm), open the lid for about 30-90 minutes (it’s okay if you leave me open longer) every week.
A larger terrarium can be ventilated for a few hours once a month.
The idea is to allow air to circulate and prevent mold growth. Mold does not like oxygen-rich environments. So if you see mold, increase ventilation.
Important: These times are a reference. Some sources suggest much less frequent intervals. Observe me every day and adjust these times if you detect a musty smell or excess moisture.
