Wash Your Brain

This week, a snip from Jenny Lawson’s fantastic Weird Little Book, How to Be Okay When Nothing is Okay. I loved the whole thing and you should buy it.

I have no incentive to promote this book except that I have a few.

1. I love books

2. I love Jenny Lawson and think she is a very weird and messy and hilarious national treasure

3. I am doing my best to pass along treasures that can help us all.

I recently set an alarm on my phone for the time I want to start winding down to go to bed. Every evening, my phone starts singing to interrupt whatever shenanigans I’m doing and gently remind me that it’s time to wash my brain.

True to form, I chose this:

Lay down, my dear brother / Lay down and take your rest / Won’t you lay your head / Upon your savior’s* breast / I love you but Jesus* loves you the best / And I bid you goodnight / Goodnight / Goodnight

*When I sing along I sub out “savior” with “pillow” and “Jesus” with “your mama” because it’s a song I’ve often sung to my dogs at bedtime and I’m not really sure what exactly to think about Jesus (if He loves me at all let alone the best, where He even is and has anyone seen Him, exactly how many dogs He has up there and if I will get to have that many if I am ever transferred from this department to that one, etc.). But lucky duck that I am, I know who loves me the best down here it’s my own mom, and I know who loves my dog the best and it’s me.

While we’re on this topic, here’s another thing to think about—from a piece called “resolutions” in my own Weird Little Book, marmalade:

Anyway, set your own alarm if you need to, and use a different sound or song that makes sense to you, or use this one and sub in whomever or whatever you like. Or just leave it to Jesus. Is that a bumper sticker?

Uh oh, we’re spinning out. . . NEVERMIND! JUST GO TO BED.
