Hello fellow parents, unschoolers and book-nerds,
This post is entirely dedicated to my self-directed reading program which I am doing in lieu of my Masters program this year, and also kinda instead of book group because a) as much as we might want to join ALL the book groups, who has the time?? and b) it seemed like perhaps you all could do with something way lower demand than having to read a book and attend a zoom session and c) you can literally do nothing and I will do everything, what’s not to like?
So here we are.
My Masters thesis is going to be about the rights of children in self-directed education settings so part of the reading I’ll be doing in the next year will be to support it but some of it will be just for fun, I promise!
All my January reading will be around childhood - reimaging, reconceptualising and theorizing childhood. Some of these books are a tad academic, sorry!! Hopefully they will inspire some interesting writing, and I’ll try to share some of what I learn.
Childhood and Postcolonization. Gaile S. Cannella & Radhika Viruru. - I read this one last month, but thought I’d add it to this list since it’s relevant, and it might be of interest.
Theorizing Childhood. Allison James, Chris Jenks, Alan Prout.
Power & Voice in Research with Children. Peter Lang.
Kith: The Riddle of the Childscape. Jay Griffiths. (I am super skeptical about this one, I hope to be proven wrong!)
