Hello Book Group Lovelies,
this month we’re reading Akilah S. Richards’ Raising Free People.
If you are home educating, unschooling, living without school.. this is a must-read. If you are living alongside young people and wondering how to do it in partnership rather than opposition.. I highly recommend this book.
For me, the biggest question that the book poses and something I continue to carry with me, that I constantly remind myself of, is this: is unschooling/living in partnership with our children INHERENTLY liberatory?
I recognise that for some of us the answer to this might be yes. I recognise that the answer to this question might be layered and complex.
And on a personal level, it’s also quite simple: because no, unschooling is not an inherently liberatory idea, nor is it inherently freeing in practice, especially for those of us who are more privileged.
I thought we could chat more about the ways Akilah S Richards conceives of freedom and liberation in the book - what does this mean to her? What does it look like in practice? What is “getting free” for your children, as she terms it?
It’s obviously going to look very different for every family, based on who you are, where you live, your background, your community, and so on.
