Alicia Thompson · the same songs over and over

You probably already know this, but on Goodreads I’m Shouty Pants, an account I’ve had since ???? Don’t make me look it up1. I’ve reviewed over 1,500 books over there!

My rules for Shouty Pants are simple:

  • I pretty much always give a five-star review — with a few rare exceptions.

  • I keep them short and sweet.

  • And I always shout.

The five-star thing is just because writing and publishing a book is hard, and I’m not looking to drag down anyone’s rating. I know how I really felt about the book, and that’s all that matters (and sometimes I put little clues to myself in my reviews about something I didn’t like about a book . . . you’ll see an example of that in this first digest.) It also frankly prevents some analysis paralysis deciding between whether it was a 3 or a 3.5 rounded up to a 4 or can this count as a 5 if I gave this other book I liked better a 5 and on and on and on. I don’t have time for that.

I don’t have time to write longer reviews, either, which is why I keep them to basically one sentence. This is the only way I’ll actually review every single book I read, because I read a lot! I had to take some of the pressure to write long, thoughtful paragraphs off the table, because then my Goodreads would become a ghost town.

The shouting is because I think it’s funny. It makes every review instantly funnier to me.

And yes, I know I should import all of this over to StoryGraph and do my reviews there. I just haven’t done it yet, and I also know as an author that Goodreads ratings/review numbers DO somewhat matter, so that’s also why I’ve continued to post on this platform.

Okay, I may end up repeating some of that each month the way the Babysitter’s Club always had to remind you that Kristy started the club and Mary Anne’s her best friend, she’s quiet and shy and that’s why she makes the best secretary, etc. etc. But let’s get into May’s books, shall we?
