Hi friends,
Emily Dickinson's "Dear March - Come in -" is always the perfect poem for the feeling of March 1st. I was glad to have the extra February day yesterday to reflect on the busy month that passed.
Over a long weekend, a friend opened her doors to a beautiful home and let me spread my pages out on the ground. We sat in the sunlight and wrote all day, and read poems to each other over candles and wine throughout the night.
This allowed me to write and share and sequence my manuscript, which has now taken on a real shape. It's been so great to see it come to life. I'll be workshopping it with my class tomorrow — I'm nervous to have people read it, but I also trust the people in that class with my whole life.
I've also been lucky to have a few of my pieces published recently. "The Test" is in issue 6 of Cherry Tree from Washington College, only available in print. I do have two copies if you want to look at it some time! There is something special about seeing your name in actual ink. And I'm really excited to dive into the rest of the issue, with its mix of poetry, prose, and "literary shade".
"This House Drinks No Water" is in Hyphen Magazine, an outlet on Asian American life that I've read and respected for a long time. The poetry editor, Marci Calabretta Cancio-Bello, wrote such a touching note to open the piece:
When I was a child, my mother told me not to drink water with meals, citing a number of digestion-related health reasons. Years later, I drank water when I could not afford food. Alice Liang's poem reminds me of those years, and of all the history captured in the habits we are taught at home.
This is one of the main reasons I write poetry and like poetry, for the connections we make between our varied histories.
Thanks again all for your support and kindness!
Alice
