Pierre Chareau built the future. We're still catching up

Most architects who matter have one idea. Chareau had something rarer: a sensibility. And it’s one we’re still trying to articulate, let alone match.

Pierre Chareau was a French architect and designer, born in Bordeaux in 1883. He came up through furniture and interiors before moving into architecture, which probably explains everything about how he thought. He wasn’t a theorist. He was someone who understood objects, materials, and rooms from the inside out. He spent most of his career in Paris, moved to New York after the war, and died in 1950 — relatively unknown outside a small circle. He built very little. His reputation rests almost entirely on one building.
