I'm Headed to Delaney Hall

Last week, detainees at the Delaney Hall ICE facility in Newark, New Jersey began a hunger strike. The conditions being reported from inside are deplorable; rotted food containing maggots, lack of access to medical care, and denial of communications with family and lawyers.

As the strike has continued, a growing number of protesters outside the facility have had numerous run ins with ICE. Last night, a woman was struck in the head with a baton. An unarmed man was shoved into oncoming traffic, resulting in his foot being crushed by an 18-wheeler.

Per Eyes on ICE, a local organization working to advocate for detainees and their families, the demands are simple:

1. An immediate in-person meeting with Governor Mikie Sherrill at Delaney Hall to directly observe conditions and hear testimony from detained individuals

2. The immediate release of vulnerable detainees, including elderly individuals, pregnant women, young people, pregnant women and those with serious medical conditions.

3. Meaningful review of immigration cases and habeas filings

4. An end to what they describe as coercive pressure to sign deportation or voluntary

   departure documents.

I will be driving up to Delaney Hall on Friday morning and will be covering the situation on the ground through Saturday. Despite increasing violence from ICE towards protesters and detainees (reports on the ground say those inside partaking in the hunger strike are being beaten and tear gassed), mainstream media is giving this situation little attention.
