On Friday, a 1000 mile march through the south launched out of Nashville, Tennessee. The goal? Get 100,000 people registered to vote.
I flew out to join the first few days of the march. We set off Saturday morning at 5am, despite downpour rain.
At the end of the first day we were soaking wet, tired, sore — and had covered 16 miles of ground.
The march is symbolic, covering 1000 miles from Nashville, to Atlanta, to Birmingham, Jackson, then back up to Memphis. Volunteers, activists, and local community orgs will walk together through some of the most gerrymandered districts in the south. This is where voting rights are on the line, where Republicans are redrawing maps to erase the political power of black and brown communities.
We are in a critical moment. The Trump administration has led multiple efforts to interfere with our elections. If we don’t act now our right to vote — the cornerstone of our democracy — is on the line. Ironically, the best way to combat these attacks on voting is by getting out the vote.
