Alex Cantone · Parenting by Design

I am the most anti-Human Design- Human Design lover you will ever meet.

It’s is one of those things that I’ve witnessed a lot of people fall in and out of love with, myself included. And I genuinely believe this is a natural part of the experimentation process.

There are times when I’ve gone hard, digging into an area of my design, experimenting with it from every angle, trying to understand it (myself) on a deeper level, until eventually hit information overload and become completely overwhelmed by the concept, borderline limited, and have to back away.

Throughout my almost-decade of studying, teaching, and working with the system, I’ve had my fair share of Human Design “breakups.” And I don’t view those seasons as bad… at all. In fact, I think they’re completely natural and necessary. Because to me, that “breakup” means I’m integrating.

It means I’ve gotten a little sick of letting the information live rent-free in my mind. It means I need to create some healthy distance in order to live my life and start coloring outside the lines a bit. This break is needed. This is important. And this is a natural part of the deconditioning process.

I always find there’s something incredibly beautiful on the other side of the “breakup,” when I find my way back. It unlocks a new level of awareness for me. A newfound sense of detachment. An energetic upgrade, if you will. And I do wonder how many people miss out on that opportunity because they throw the baby out with the bathwater when they start mentally reeling. When what they actually needed was to stop trying so hard to be good at Human Design.

Maybe this is your reminder to put down the books, turn off that podcast, close that terribly generic chat gpt thread about your design, and find out what remains true when you’re not constantly thinking about whether or not you’re “doing your design right.”

Because the second Human Design becomes prescriptive, we’re entering incredibly disempowering territory. And that was never the point!!

You are more than what your mind thinks your Human Design is supposed to look like.

Human design is intended to be an incredibly non-mental exploration. The whole process of “living in alignment” is to stop letting the mind run the show, make decisions for you, create rules, and decide what the “correct” life looks like. But when the way you consume Human Design happens entirely through the mind, it’s hard to navigate your way out of that way of operating

You open up your socials, scroll through 1000 generalized infographics, read five lines about a Generator’s ideal creative flow, watch a reel about the ideal Projector morning routine, and read an article telling Manifestors when they should work and when they should rest. You feel the initial resonance of being seen. But when you try to implement it, you meet resistance.

“The idea of having an endless well of energy as a Generator isn’t clicking. I must not be doing enough of what lights me up.”

“I’m a Projector and I actually love working… am I an anomaly?”

“I’m a Manifestor and I don’t experience life as one giant urge-rest cycle. Am I doing too much… or not enough?”

“But I make decisions all the time before a lunar cycle ends as a Reflector. Am I too impulsive?”

The mind has a funny way of chalking it up to, I’m doing it wrong. I’m not deconditioned enough. I’m not living my design correctly.

But this couldn’t be further from the truth.

The reality is, your type is the most surface-level aspects of your design. It gives us something incredibly useful (your strategy) but we have taken these broad energetic mechanics and created entire personalities, lifestyles, parenting styles, work schedules, and identities around them.

Because social media needs Human Design to be digestible. It needs five hard-hitting slides to go viral. It needs “3 things every Generator mom should know” to get clicks. It needs something the mind can grab onto to hook you. And I’m not knocking creators out there. I’ve literally built an entire business on all of the above.

But the irony of it all is that we’re trying to mentally understand a system that is quite literally trying to show us how to stop letting the mind run our life. The mind doesn’t speak in energetics. It speaks in concepts. It wants an idea of what something looks like so that it can reproduce it.

Embodying your Human Design means no longer living from your mind. Embodiment requires you to close the books, get off the internet, live a little, experiment with some stuff you might know is wrong for you, and notice how it all feels. Living your Design means dog-earing moments where you hear yourself tell the truth, and when you notice yourself saying yes to shit you hate doing. Embodiment means you to stop living inside the “shoulds” of what being your type looks like on paper. And while this article will apply to anyone looking for a new way to work with Human Design, I think this becomes especially important when we start talking about what Design looks like inside motherhood.

Because it’s so easy to go, “Oh! A Generator mom!” and assume that means she inherently has access to something I don’t as a Projector mom. She must have more energy than I do. She has a greater capacity for her kids. That’s why she seems to be thriving when I’m not.

Meanwhile, the Generator mom is sitting across from me thinking, I have never felt less energized or equipped for anything in my life.

That’s the kind of nuance I want to talk about. The stuff that challenges the the viral infographics that, don’t get me wrong, are beautiful and fun, but don’t always speak to the human who is struggling inside of their own experiment.

Because understanding how you’re designed to operate takes more than knowing a surface-level synopsis of your type. It takes discernment, and the skill of being tapped into your inner authority. It takes a willingness to experiment with what works, to be honest about what doesn’t, and to stop trying to fit yourself into a version of motherhood that a system was never prescribing to you in the first place.

My point is, this is about you. Doing what’s best for you means learning how to work with your energy and mother in a way that actually supports your life.

I invite you to read each and every one. I truly believe there’s something for everyone inside each reframe. And if you’re not a mom, but just a Human Design lover (or skeptic, or recently had a breakup with Human Design) there’s something in here for you, too.

As always: take what resonates. Leave the rest. None of this is a rule. Just a raw 6am channel where my thumbs couldn’t stop moving in my notes app.

If the Human Design information out there has convinced you that being a Generator means there is some magic button that taps you into a limitless well of energy you were born in, and you can’t seem to find the button, you’re in the right place.

And if you think you’re missing something, or you’re worried you’re “not lit up” by parenting because you haven’t tapped into that sparkly Generator energy that makes you forget time and space exists, you’re also in the right place.

I have such a soft spot for Generator women (MG’s this applies to you too), because I genuinely think the world gets you guys wrong. I think a lot of the more general Generator information out there is talking about your energy from the perspective of a Generator man with a 24-hour clock. We throw out phrases like “energetic consistency” and “the same amount of energy in the tank every day” And sure, I could use those phrases to describe my Generator husband. But even witnessing him on a regular basis and understanding his chart on a deeper level, I recognize that, while he might be more consistent in what he has access to than me, he doesn’t literally wake up with the same amount to give to each and every day.

None of us do!

We are always in sync, whether we realize it or not, with the transits, the astrological weather, the season we’re in, our bodies, our lives. There are days where we collectively feel more on fire and other days where everyone we cross paths with says a different version of “I’m fucking exhausted today.” And if you’re a Generator, you’re allowed to be tired! Even in the middle of the day. GASP. Some days ask more of you, and some days, you might genuinely feel like you’re super-energy moms. But on the days where you don’t feel that way, you don’t have to make your lack of energy a problem to solve.

As a Generator mother being “aligned” doesn’t mean you’re always tapped into some magical limitless well of energy. Being aligned means tapping into your rhythms, and your unique flow inside motherhood.

This is the good part! Because it might not be motherhood that’s draining you but the fact that you’ve let motherhood swallow you whole without thinking about what you need inside of it. And I get it, I’ve been there. Because in the beginning it really does feel like it’s swallowing us whole. It really does feel like we fall victim to our kids’ rhythms and needs. But I can’t express how important it is as a Generator to lean into more of what energizes you, no matter what season of motherhood your in. Because that is what’s going to make you feel like you’re in a flow again.

Do not rid yourself of the rituals that energize you just because you have a baby attached to your hip or kids to drive all over town. You must make it your mission to find the little pockets of time that make you feel like a human inside this life you’re living. You must find a way to make room for you.

Do you actually feel in tune with your rhythm and flow? Or have you convinced yourself you have to be a victim to everyone else’s in order to be a ‘good mom’?

If you’re struggling figure out how to tap back into your joy inside of this newfound life you’ve stumbled into, start here:

Pay attention to your whole day. Do you like to wake up a certain way? Do you need a drink or movement ritual in the morning before everyone else starts needing you? Is there something you need to do at night so that tomorrow feels less chaotic? Is there a certain pocket of the day where You can give yourself space to connect back within?

A hot take for Generators: in order for your sacral to operate correctly, you need discipline. Discipline will offer you the space and structure you need to follow your sacral cues when they arrive.

This means making it a rule that you always engage in a ritual, no matter what. And I’m sorry, I know this isn’t pretty advice. I don’t have a bow to wrap this in for you. But if you’re a mom too, you know commitment to your self care rituals takes real discipline. Because if you don’t make it your mission to find those little moments where you can do something, anything, the smallest little thing for you, it’s never going to happen. No one is going to give you permission to take time. You have to take it for yourself.

Just because you’re built to respond does not mean you are a responding machine. And it absolutely doesn’t mean responding to your kids every single need is going to energize you. Say no! Yes, I’m telling you to say no to your kids! Not all the time, but when you’re reaching that breaking point and you need some space, say no and take a beat.

And please don’t let someone convince you you’re mom-ing wrong if every day of motherhood doesn’t spark insane joy. It probably won’t. But you can find moments. Rituals that evoke joy. Little things that give you that warm, fuzzy feeling you’re craving. Ways of arranging your life so that it still feels like your life inside motherhood. That, to me, feels far more useful than trying to convince yourself you’re not build for motherhood if you’re not an energy robot.

If you’re nodding yes but simultaneously thinking, but I just don’t have time. Perhaps journal around one or all of these questions (and please don’t skip the last one):

What’s the story I’m telling myself around ‘not having (time/space/energy)’ in this season of motherhood?

Where am I feeling taken advantage of right now? Where am I saying ‘yes’ when I want to say ‘no’?

What am I engaging in that is taking time/energy FROM me? And what practices do I need to give time/energy back TO ME?

Inside of my current conditions and circumstances, what would my ideal set up look like? What would energetic balance look/feel like?

I suggest making an actual plan for how you can implement what you dreamt up for #4. Start removing things that are draining the life out of you immediately (specifically the things you have control over removing), and get creative with how you can carve out little pockets of your day to invite yourself back into your own life. In order to find satisfaction inside of your setup, you will have to remember that you set the rhythm of your own life. And you really do have choice.

In fact, you have a lot more choice than you think.

(And please read the MG section below!)

Is there a part of you that has let yourself get swallowed up by the idea that your sporadic or nonlinear energy somehow makes you ill-equipped as a mother?

Or maybe the opposite. Is there a part of you hiding behind the identity of being “multi-passionate” “chaotic” or someone who is just supposed to have a million things going on at once— and perhaps even questioning whether that actually deeply resonates with you?

So much of the Manifesting Generator jargon is a mental explanation of the real energetic way that is you. At your core, you are a Generator. You are a sacral being. You are designed to respond. You are here to follow what excites you. But the design says that you may have multiple whims you’re following at once. That doesn’t make you flaky. It doesn’t make you noncommittal. It doesn’t make you less capable of creating consistency or depth. It just makes you, you.

But I also wonder how many Manifesting Generators have become attached to the idea that they need multiple things going at once in order to be living their design correctly. Further, I bet there are some of you out there who absolutely love doing one thing you’re holding yourself back from experiencing to the fullest because you’ve been told the “correct” way to be a Manifesting Generator is to have multiple interests.

What if there is one thing you cannot stop thinking about, and you’re meant to explore it from ten different angles?

What if the multiple things you’ve been told are “normal” to hold at once are actually just distractions from the real thing your body keeps bringing you back to?

And have there been times inside motherhood where you’ve convinced yourself to hold it all because someone told you you’re designed to?

On the motherhood front — have you taken on the mental load, the logistics, the scheduling, the hobbies, the side quests, everyone else’s needs, and made it part of your identity that you’re just a little chaotic and disorganized because…whelp, I’m an MG!

If you are up to your neck in spinning plates right now, and it’s genuinely draining you, I invite you to let them all come crashing down. Not necessarily in a fuck it, I’m outta here kind of way. More like: Hey. Let me lay all of this out in front of me and really look at what my BODY has the energy to respond to. Not what your mind says you should be capable of because you’re “supposed” to be a multi-passionate, multifaceted being. But really, honestly: What does my body have the energy for inside this season of motherhood right now?

And if you need to tuck something away…a responsibility, a chore, a hobby, a side quest.. know that it doesn’t have to be forever. But if you’re feeling depleted, you do have to be honest with yourself about what rituals need your energy in order for you to feel fulfilled right now, and what might just be fluff or distraction.

Don’t let the mental idea of who you are supposed to be as a Manifesting Generator stop you from being inside of the life you actually have in front of you.

Don’t let someone convince you that it’s okay to hover above all the beauty because there’s not enough room for you to land when you’re busy flying from one thing to another.

Don’t let your mind convince you that you’re “not designed to slow down,” or that slowing down somehow means you’re doing your design incorrectly.

Maybe slowing down and taking inventory is the exact thing you need right now to move into a deeper embodiment of your multifaceted nature. Maybe maturing as a mother is closing the door on some of the things you’re still saying yes to, but your body is begging you to reconsider. Because just because you have the residual energy (to sometimes) do the dance, doesn’t mean you should. And it doesn’t mean that’s the best use of your energy right now.

A hot take for Manifesting Generators that mirrors what I said to Generators: maybe a little discipline around how you’re using your energy is one of the most freeing things you can give yourself. Discipline that helps you discern what gets access to you in this season of life.

If you’re feeling stretched thin right now, perhaps journal around one or all of these questions:

What am I currently holding because I genuinely have energy for it? What am I holding because I believe I should be able to?

If I stopped trying to prove that I can “do it all” what would I immediately want to put down?

What is the thing (or handful of things) my body keeps bringing me back to right now? Inside of this season of motherhood, what would it look like to give those things more of me?

Can you trust that being fully inside of the life in front of you does not make you any less of a Manifesting Generator?

(Also: read the Generator section. There’s more in there on the mechanics that absolutely applies to you too. Manifestor section, too)

Don’t get so attached to the idea that your “cycles” mean something about you. Watch where you’re using your mind to determine when your bursts of output and rest should be, and what those things “should” look like in order to be correct.

If you’ve been go, go, go for a while with no end in sight, don’t let your mind convince you to rest and retreat if that’s not where you’re genuinely being pulled.

And in the inverse — if you haven’t stopped and you’re craving rest, but your mind is saying, but we’re not finished — don’t let “the Manifestor way” convince you to move in one direction or the other.

None of this information is about dictating your actions from the mind. Your body will dictate your flow… if you let it.

There might be times inside motherhood where you have the need to go do something and you feel like everyone in your household is holding you back. Like they’re restraining you from living out your life in the exact way you want to, or what would be “ideal.” But perhaps you can see that feeling as an opportunity to invite in a new way of engaging with your family that’s never been done before.

You don’t have to bring your family with you everywhere you go…. like in a mental sense, not a physical sense, because you probably do have to BRING them. And the question is: how can you “bring” them along without “bringing them” really? By making the plan and informing them. And also, your motherhood doesn’t have to revolve around kid stuff. They just want to be involved in your life. Take them on your journey. Show them places that excite you. They will be 1000x happier with a mother who is letting their kids tag along with her whims vs. taking them to a soul-sucking kid-centered place where they’ll probs get sick anyway.

Remember, what can sometimes be perceived as your abrasive or impulsive nature is also showing your kids how to be so unshaken in their unique way of being that the rest of the world doesn’t need to be on their side in order for them to have permission to go where they’re going. You are literally showing your child that through your aligned behavior. In daily practice, this might look like saying, “We’re doing this today,” instead of following the regularly scheduled programming. And I bet your kids will absolutely love it.

Stop acting like motherhood handed you a box of constraints that are holding you back from living out the life you want to live. Yes, it’s different. Yes, you don’t have the same creative freedom you had prior. And, you are not a victim. There is a way for you that works for everyone. And you are here to blaze an entirely new path as an example of what that can look like as a mom.

If there’s something you’ve all become comfortable in and then all of a sudden you have the impulse to switch things up, honor it. Just make sure you give your family the warning signal before you strip that thing away. It is normal to change seasonally, and there is no reason to hold onto something— a routine, a daily rhythm, a way of doing things — that is no longer feeling like the thing. Your body will know when your time has expired and when it’s time to switch things up.

You set the timing for your family. This does not mean you have to lead charge of every single thing. It means you inform, and the rest of the crew can act accordingly.

Just because you’re the Manifestor does not mean you have to hold it all.

And just because you set the timing does not mean you have to be the leader of your family in every single way. If it doesn’t feel natural to lead, but you have ideas and whims you want to experience, vocalize them and let your partner or people who love you execute. Even your kids! Just because you’re the first one with the idea doesn’t mean you have to execute and lead charge for every little thing. And I think this matters especially for Manifestor women, because you may end up carrying the mental load of being the one who is always DECIDING.

Your body senses the change that needs to come first. You see what needs to shift. You know when something has expired. And that can very easily turn into you becoming the leader of the house by default. Let’s be honest about what that means for you as a Manifestor woman: you have to balance that out with letting your partner, or someone else, carry some of the mental and physical load too.

Let yourself be LED in other ways. Even if it doesn’t land perfectly. You can still appreciate the sentiment of being taken care of, and you can be very explicit about how you want to be cared for, knowing it still might not land because that’s just not your vibe that day. Maybe being cared for looks like your partner saying, Hey, I got it. go take a day… an afternoon… 10 minutes.. whatever! Maybe you book the trip and let your partner coordinate travel day-of.

For you, it’s not about being the one who executes the actual plan. You are simply the one who DECIDES where' you’re headed next. Being a Manifestor is not about being the one who’s always in control. It’s about witnessing your body determine your next move. Informing creates a container for others to recognize how to execute the changes you’re moving towards. And knowing when it’s time to let go is what creates space for you to be taken care of.

If you’re feeling like you’re always the one deciding, planning, or carrying the team, perhaps journal around these:

Where have I confused initiating with executing everything?

Do I trust others (partner, family, whoever is in your village) to know how to take care of me? Am I making my needs clear?

What urge have I been feeling in my body that I’m talking myself out of because I’m telling myself it would disrupt everyone else?

Where am I expecting everyone around me to just, “get it”? And where can I inform more?

How can I let myself be taken care of, even if the way someone else does it isn’t exactly how I would have done it?

You do not have to make yourself smaller to fit inside motherhood. And you do not have to carry the entire thing just because you’re the first one who feels when change is upon you.

This is gonna be a different one because I’m right there with you, and I’m not going to sit here and give you some bullshit permission slip to do less as a parent. I’m actually going to challenge you to look at your life and ask yourself how your Projector prescription has convinced you that you’re not capable of more than what you’re actually available for.

I get it. When you found out you were a Projector and you weren’t here to keep up with the rest of the world, it was the biggest exhale of your life. And it felt like the greatest relief in the world to give yourself permission slip after permission slip to slow down, disengage, remove the extreme output, and sink deeper into all of the ways of doing life that feel genuinely nourishing for you.

That exhale was a nervous system reset. You needed to take it all off your plate because you had been on overdrive your whole life, doing all the doing, doing more doing than everyone around you, until you became so exhausted that this permission slip was finally an invitation for your nervous system to relax. And good! You needed the rest. You needed to recalibrate.

But then you became a mom and the demands started piling on. Those dreamy 8–10 hours of sleep became a far distant thing to reach, and while you LOVE your kids deeply, the daily demands had you fantasizing about running in the other direction.

You’re a Projector. You’re not designed for this. Being a mother is too much for your sweet, sensitive system. Right? WRONG.

Stop letting the most surface-level aspect of your Human Design convince you that you’re inherently not built for something your body literally came here to do. And I don’t want this Projector section to come off as a, “suck it up and get over it” type-thing. But oh my gosh, we Projectors are missing out on so much incredible magic and really exciting innovation inside motherhood if we continue convincing ourselves that the only way to get through this period of time that must be “inherently misaligned with our energy” is to white-knuckle it and pray for these days to pass as quickly as possible.

As a Projector, you are here to transmute energy. You literally have the gift of knowing where energy belongs. You know how to use energy effectively and efficiently. And no, tapping into this gift will not bypass the hard.

But the challenge is an invitation for you to study your own energy inside motherhood so that you can design a system (*cough* the thing you’re absolutely brilliant at) that works for you.

The reason motherhood is draining you may not be because motherhood itself is inherently misaligned for you. It may be because you’re convincing yourself you have to be a certain type of mother in order for your kids to be well-nourished and taken care of. The truth is: the only type of mother they need you to be is the one that is more you.

And when you actually look at all of the ways you’re engaging in life that aren’t working— not just the big, blaring things like “lacking sleep,” but the little energy leaks— this is where I want you to get real with yourself.

Take inventory of all the little ways you’re trying to keep up. Take inventory of all the activities you have your kids signed up for. The school schedules and expectations. All the fucking things we’re told our kids need to be a part of, and that we need to participate in with them in order to give them the most enriched life.

I’m not even telling you to create the most perfect, most ideal setup (although I do encourage you to dream into that idea). But I am telling you there are probably AT LEAST 1–3 small things that you know off the top of your head are absolutely draining you.

And maybe the story needs to stop being that it’s motherhood that’s draining you. Maybe it’s the way you’ve been shown (or told) how to do it. Maybe it’s the way you’ve been convinced it has to look in order for it to be right.

I bet you could cut back on 50% of what you’re doing and guess what? Your kids are going to be absolutely fine. And probably happier too.

You can design a motherhood that requires less output from you. Less rushing out of the house to get somewhere every single day. Less packing the schedule to the brim with activities. Less keeping up with all the other moms. Your activities can become more intentional. Think: less, but MORE.

Less of you stretched thin across everything = a higher-quality version of you available for what actually matters.

And this is where I think we need to make a distinction between energy and vitality.

There’s doing what’s soul-sucking, and then there’s output that is actually energy-giving. All output is not draining for Projectors. Honestly, that applies to everyone. But output that is not soul-nourishing will not cycle back into vital energy.

I think we’ve gotten confused and started believing that any energy output is inherently draining for a Projector, or any non-sacral being. And I just don’t believe that’s true. Being a mother is incredibly energy-giving for me. That doesn’t mean I have a limitless well of energy to give to my kids. But when I’m doing motherhood in a way where I’m not abandoning myself, and I’m honoring what I know I need in order to feel nourished, I feel incredibly filled by it. And it actually GIVES me energy.

Projector, you really can have it all if you decide that everything you want is correct for you. Because what is correct for you will energize you.

But if you have convinced yourself that doing = wrong, that extending yourself, even further into the goodness you desire, is wrong for you, then that is the reality you will create for yourself. If you believe there will always be a chip on your shoulder, and your effort will always be less because of who you are designed to be, then that’s the story you will begin to live inside of.

But what if you begin to see the life you’ve been invited into as a well of creativity and vitality? What if it makes you so endlessly on fire about what you love that you couldn’t imagine stopping? What if no one could tell you, “No, you need to slow down because you’re a Projector”?

Imagine if you had just happened upon this life without knowing your design? Without the mental constraints. Without the limiting beliefs telling you that you have to stop after X amount of effort because you’re going to be depleted. Who’s to tell you how much you have to give? Who gets to decide but you how much you’re available for?

If you’re reading this and realizing you might have built your entire reality around avoiding depletion, I’d invite you to get really honest about where that avoidance is actually protecting you, and where it may be holding you back from experiencing your life more fully. Perhaps journal around these questions:

Where have I let being a Projector become a reason for why I can’t do something I actually deeply want to do?

What are the 1–3 small things inside my current motherhood that I already know are draining the life out of me? Be brutally honest.

Where am I stretching myself thin because I’ve convinced myself this is what a “good mom” does? What could I remove, simplify, or do completely differently? Be INVENTIVE!!

What kinds of output leave me depleted… and what kinds of output actually leave me feeling more alive, creative, connected, and vital?

Where have I confused “using energy” with “losing energy”?

If I stopped asking, “How much can I handle as a Projector?” … what would I do more of?

I’m not saying we have to deny our Projector-hood all together. But I’d like for us to be in on some not so secret pact as fellow Projectors to stop using our design as a measuring stick for how much of life we’re capable of experiencing.

Because let’s be honest, you are an incredibly self-aware, tapped in individual. You know when you’re tired. You know when something is draining the shit out of you. But you also know when something makes you feel so alive that the effort becomes part of your nourishment. Learn to notice the difference. And then design your motherhood around that.

I’m just going to get to the point, I think the downfall of you will be a life where every day is the same. And while discipline might feel like the exact opposite thing you would need in that case, it’s actually the thing that’s going to set you free. You need structure so that you can actually have space to be delighted inside of your own life.

The worst thing you can do is absolutely nothing… as in, convince yourself that because you’re a Reflector mom, you shouldn’t have a schedule at all. There needs to be parameters so that you have space to free your mind. Otherwise you’ll spend the whole day trying to mentally figure out how to take care of everyone while slowly disappearing into the background.

Believing that everything needs to be completely open-ended and fluid all the time, because you are an open-ended and fluid being, is a quick way to set you up for failure. You need containers to play inside of. Boundaries to bounce around in. And structure to ground you into what you’re realistically available for.

I really want you to read every single section above because throughout your lunar cycle, you will experience the full spectrum of energy. But if I had to choose one section for you to read in addition to your own, it would be the Projector one. I think you’re going to deeply relate to the idea of having to do motherhood in a certain way in order to ‘do it right.’ I also think it applies to you that there is a way for you to be incredibly inventive about what your relationship with your kids gets to look like.

You can build a life that is incredibly supportive for your energy. AND you have to be realistic about how you are shifting and changing on a regular basis. You might design your motherhood monthly as opposed to a daily or weekly rhythm.

This absolutely doesn’t mean scheduling you’re entire month in advance, but if you are a Reflector who is attuned to their cycle, you probably have an idea of how energy moves through you. And you can build out a life that is incredibly supportive of your energy. While also being real that what feels supportive may shift and change on a regular basis.

This might mean having childcare that is more flexible than rigid. Someone you can call on the spot, a mom friend you can hit up for a walk (that is real and you can call it in). Or just a mindset shift where you don’t beat yourself up when you don’t have the same energy you had yesterday. Your work inside motherhood is all about embracing inconsistency. Not trying to shape shift into what you think your family needs you to be, but trusting that the version of you who woke up as today is more than enough.

There may be weeks where you want to be out in the world constantly, seeing people, going places, letting yourself be surprised by what finds you. And there may be weeks where your body wants to be at home with less stimulation, less input, and very little interaction. Please don’t convince yourself the “low” weeks mean your entire system is falling apart. Please don’t let your lack of engagement become a story about how you’re failing as a mom.

The point isn’t creating the perfect routine and then proving to yourself (or your partner) that you can stick to it. For you, it’s about creating structure you can dance inside of so that you’re not reinventing your entire life every morning. There are things you do all the time. Things you do sometimes. And then room for you to play in between.

Maybe somewhere along the way someone told you being a Reflector was about having total freedom… zero structure… no rules… absolutely no limits. But sometimes the lack of structure creates more of a mental load. As a Reflector mother, one of the most nourishing things you can do for yourself is remove the endless “what ifs” and “what nows” by having a schedule with endless permission to deviate when it’s not feeling aligned.

Give yourself something to ground into each day when you wake up. What does your morning rhythm at home look like? Rather, what are a few options you can pick out of a metaphorical hat depending on what your energy is calling for that day? What are some simple, reliable meals that don’t put pressure you to reinvent the wheel every when dinner time rolls around? Can you choose one day a week where you do absolutely nothing, where you don’t leave the house, where you can all just make room to be surprised and delighted by what the day brings?

The question is not, How do I escape structure? The question is: What kind of structure gives me enough safety and spaciousness to actually enjoy being surprised by my own life?

If you’re feeling either completely boxed in by your current routine or completely untethered without one, perhaps journal around these:

Where has “being flexible” actually created more mental load for me?

What are the few daily or weekly anchors that make me feel more supported, rather than constrained?

What parts of my current rhythm feel stale simply because I’ve outgrown them?

Where could I create more novelty, surprise, or spaciousness without dismantling the structures that are actually helping me?

If I thought about my life in seasons or months instead of expecting every day to feel the same, what would I give myself permission to change?

You don’t need every day to be different. But you probably do need enough room inside your life for you to be different.

Build the container, and then give yourself permission to keep changing what happens inside of it.

If you’ve made it all the way here, thank you. And if you’ve read them all, thank you even more! When I read back what I wrote for each type, I thought, wow, there’s truly something I can take away from each and every one of these. And I mean it. The deeper I get into Human Design, the more I realize this isn’t about boxing yourself into one way of being and saying, well, I’m not a Manifestor, so I guess none of this applies to me (even if I resonate with it all deeply). No! That’s not the point at all. The point is to learn from one another. To see someone expressing themselves freely and say, how can I have a piece of that and make it mine?

There is no singular way to do things right. Especially in motherhood. I hope these reframes, and especially the journal prompts offer up some space for you to see things differently, and perhaps even give a glimpse into what it might look like to actually embody the energetics that you came here Be.

I want you to share your experience with Human Design in the comments. What landed? What did I miss? Give it to me!
