Alexandra Wendt · Till We Find Joy

This was a spur-of-the-moment Instagram story I posted back in February 2024:

This is something that has stuck with me ever since. The thought of places and sensory experiences holding our memories (and not in a New Age-y way, in a poetic way) isn’t new to me. I experienced the same feeling when I returned to Siena, Italy for a gap year a little over a year after a four-month study abroad. The patterns my feet traced in the streets, the lingering hint of cigarette smoke in the air, the familiar bars and shops, took me back to study abroad in a breathtaking way.

Maybe this is simplistic. The idea of visiting a place from long ago and being overwhelmed by memories isn’t exactly a unique thing to write about. But there’s something deeper I’m trying to tease out. Something in the details: in the hum of the caldaia (hot water heater) in apartments here that will always specifically make me think of the one in my host family’s home in Siena. The bumpy impressions of a quilt recalling how you got a mild rug burn from constantly balancing on your elbow on it while checking on a fussy newborn in the bassinet beside the bed. Not being able to hear a peacock’s earsplitting screech without thinking about basking in the sunshine in spring 2020, thinking how lucky you were to have access to a private yard at the time.

These embody the definition of “vignette” to me. Simple, ordinary places, senses, and things, packed with an abundance of memory and emotion.

Do you have anything like this in your own life?
