SCOTLAND TRIP
I’ve been putting off writing this newsletter because I want to tell you all about my trip and I’m still at a bit of a loss of words to describe how fantastic it was.
My best friend came with me on this trip and she re-read KILT TRIP before we got there and was running around with me like, “Addie was here!” and “Logan would hate the Royal Mile!” which made the whole thing even more fun, because to be honest, it was kind of strange that Addie and Logan *weren’t* there since that’s right where I left them!
KILT TRIP starts where I spent my last day in Edinburgh during study abroad—on Calton Hill. It has my favorite view, looking across the city past the Balmoral clock tower and the Scot Monument, to Edinburgh Castle. It was many drafts in before this moment crystallized for me, but Addie experiencing this view for the first time through Logan’s eyes is one of my very favorite moments in the book.
We did all the touristy things, as one must, and saw the castle and the bagpipers and bought trinkets on the Royal Mile.
We got to wander the city and travel by train (the very best form of travel). We ate a lot of gelato and a small amount of haggis. I had forgotten the hoppy smell of Edinburgh and when I got off the plane, was immediately hit with the recognition of how much I love this place! So if you were wondering if I was a weepy mess this entire trip…YES I WAS.
SCOT AND BOTHERED
If I haven’t screamed about it yet, my Book 2 is called SCOT AND BOTHERED and the hero, Jack, is Logan’s brother. It’s set on The Skye Trail, an 80-mile hike on the Isle of Skye, where two exes reunite to help their ailing mentor finish her memoir.
Now, if you’ve been to the UK, you know they drive on the wrong side of the road AND the wrong side of the car. And if you’ve ever been to Skye, you know the roads are mostly one lane with these passing sections and you have to play chicken with any oncoming car and one of you has to back up to the last passing section. Needless to say, it was out of the question for me to drive there. Which was fine, because I love a good bus tour.
So, my friend and I spent a very long day out on Skye with a tour group and a guide (who was not as good as Logan, obviously, but was still very lovely) and it was so magical. Seriously, I’ve never encountered this color green anywhere else in the world.
Here I am on the Skye Trail!! This was my favorite moment of the whole tour. I’ve been watching countless videos of people hiking and imagining Jack and Brooke out here, but setting foot on the trail with the rain pouring and the mist swirling over the craggy mountains was such a perfect moment and made me SO excited to keep writing this story.
Here I am “hiking,” as if I wouldn’t lose my life attempting this trail.
The enchanted waters under the Old Sligachan Bridge. Never fear, SCOT AND BOTHERED will be as full of magical places as KILT TRIP!
