The idea of laughter lines and the third installment of my poetry series

I’m not sure why, but I find myself writing on Wednesdays. I posted the second poem in my poetry series last Wednesday. So naturally, I woke up today with the urge to post another one. I woke up with the desire to write. Maybe that’s because I’ve been doing the Morning Pages in the morning, for once, which is when they’re most effective. My morning yoga practice is akin to the Morning Pages in how I feel refreshed afterwards. My body feels wrung out yet open, ready to take on the day. The pages do this for my mind, which has been particularly restless lately. Maybe it’s because I’ve had to skip my morning yoga for the last few days because my knee is a little messed up. If I can’t stretch my body, I may as well stretch my creativity.

Today, I have another poem for you. If you read my last post, you know I took a poetry class in college that was incredibly inspiring. The poem I’d like to share today is one of those, and it also happens to be rooted in my own experiences.

After first hearing the song Laughter Lines by Bastille, I was fascinated by the idea of laughter lines. Memories etched onto delicate skin. It got me thinking. What it’s like to know someone so completely that you feel they’re part of you. So ingrained in your emotional being that they bare some responsibility for the lines creasing your skin. The idea was beautiful to me.

There are many songs about meeting a stranger, becoming lovers, and then returning to strangers once again. The connection may be gone, but the impact it had is not. My first poem in this series addresses a similar topic, which you can read here. I loved how Bastille sang about this topic. There’s something so visceral about the idea of laughter lines, of someone else causing them. I had to play with that experience and put it into words.

This poem doesn’t require further explanation. After all, the beauty of poetry lies in its ability to mean something different to each reader.

Laughter lines

Let’s get lost and pretend we were ever found in the
Beginning. On this beautiful day that has us feeling kind
Of strange because we’ve forgotten our place. Our footing slipped and we
Lost sight of our aspirations. I rush past you and let you escape from
View where you rush to somewhere new. An unknown destination
And someone else’s comfort. I look forward and resist the call to turn back
Nothing is there anymore, you’re just another person and my memories
Start to fade with your figure. My laughter lines once spelled your name but now
When my eyes crinkle from a fake smile they don’t spell out anything.
Nothing at all.
