Although it was my firm intention to make this third session of digression into Wagner’s ‘Meistersinger’ the final one, the preliminary remarks proved once again so complex and ramified in their own right that the dramatic detail of the opera’s third act could not, as I had intended, be addressed.

To face the facts, indeed, it must be conceded that these talks are becoming, as time goes on, less strict and systematic expositions of a single theme than extemporizations ranging into a whole mass of unrelated fields linked by only the most tenuous threads to the body of work (in this case Nietzsche’s published books) that forms their stated topic. The audio posted today, for example, ranges across such disparate fields as the theology of kenosis, Golden Age Hollywood cinema, the fictions of Jorge Luis Borges, early 20th-century Irish history and the Jason Arday scandal.

We shall have to wait and see whether my audience finds this meandering confusing and excessive and the talks begin to go unlistened to, or whether this agglomeration of digressions around a barely sustained, and lengthily deferred, central theme is, after all, a viable format for a podcast.
