Liam Coen is up there as one of the best situational play callers in the NFL. Off the top of my head, he is probably #2 behind Ben Johnson as we enter the 2026 season.
Coen’s 2024 Buccaneers offense was the top 3rd down offense in the NFL. His play design and weekly-specific game plans played a huge role in this.
In 2025 as the first year head coach of the Jaguars, the red zone design stood out. Here is one example from week 15.
A (relatively) unique way to run Spider protection. No fullback, tight end will Flash the defensive end before releasing to the flat. The goal is to occupy the flat player with the play fake to open up the first read (Y).
If the cornerback (or down safety) takes the Flash (Y), the Low Cross (X) will be able to work the back line freely. The slight spray for two steps helps separate against man coverage. This route wins in the clip below.
The Dig-Return serves as a nice back side read if the quarterback needs to get to it.
If you want to take a deep dive into Coen’s entire offense, I wrote a manual on his 2024 Buccaneers season. The book takes you concept by concept through his system.
