We are delighted to announce that documentary filmmaker and Alborada Films associate Teilo Vellacott’s documentary Independent Candidate will feature in competition at the Festival Internacional de Cine Pobre de Gibara (Poor Cinema International Festival, Gibara). The film’s protagonist Fiona Lali will attend the festival in Cuba to take part in a post-screening Q&A.
The festival, founded in 2003 by legendary Cuban director Humberto Solás, runs from 14-18 July and will feature films from 20 countries.
Independent Candidate is an observational documentary following Fiona Lali and her Revolutionary Communist Party’s (RCP) 2024 parliamentary campaign in Stratford & Bow, East London. The film captures the everyday reality of grassroots politics and the determined energy of RCP’s activists. They are running to win, but the film focuses more on the campaign than the result, as Fiona and her comrades organise to bring their vision of radical change directly to the people.

Teilo Vellacott & Pablo Navarrete are the co-directors of Truce (2017), a film that explores the Colombian peace negotiations through the stories of women FARC guerrillas. These women have laid down their arms, left the Colombian jungle and are now in Havana, Cuba negotiating a peace deal with the Colombian government, which they hope will not only bring an end to the world’s longest armed conflict, but will also guarantee women’s rights and social justice in Colombia.
