On May 23, 2026, a suspect approached a Secret Service checkpoint at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue near the White House, pulled a gun from his bag, and opened fire on officers. Officers returned fire, striking the suspect, who was taken to the hospital and later died. A bystander was also struck by gunfire. No law enforcement officers were injured. President Donald Trump was at the White House at the time. The suspect was described as an emotionally disturbed individual who had previously been issued a stay-away order.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has privately told confidants that Israel currently has limited ability to influence U.S. President Donald Trump’s decisions regarding Iran. This comes amid U.S. negotiations for a potential deal to end the nearly three-month-old conflict and as Israel has been largely left out of the talks. Netanyahu acknowledged that Israel “has no manoeuvre to influence the president right now,” despite ongoing concerns over Iran’s nuclear program.
