Hello again, dear reader.
In case you're new here, I'm Alastair Johnston and you're receiving this newsletter because you subscribed over at my blog or via a link from Substack. I'm grateful for you giving me some of your time and attention and hope I always inform or entertain you here. If not, please feel free to unsubscribe, I won't be offended.
Un-optimising Dog Walks
I’m fighting back against machine thinking while walking my hounds. A short piece over on the blog where I have an ‘aha’ moment whilst picking up dog poo.
Local Cash Economies
And while you’re over on the blog, if you visit my digital garden via the secret leaf link, you’ll find a new story about a simple way to re-engage small, human community relationships. I’ve been guilty in the past of choosing large, branded, national companies for work. It felt safe and was more convenient. But choosing to get some work done by a local, and paying in cash, reminded me of another way we rebuild communities and un-machine.
Some other things I’ve been pondering
Here’s a few links to things I’ve been reading or watching lately:
Provide a legal right to access certain services without a digital device. Tim Arnold of The Super Connected has put a UK parlimentary petition together to ask our MP’s to think about enshrining the right of people to engage in society without having to own a smartphone. If you’re in the UK, please support this. I have and think it’s vital.
Rob Wringham’s New Escapologist Kickstarter is up to fund another 4 issues of his ace magazine. In my opinion better than The Idler. Bag your advance orders now.
Apparently, your smartphone is a parasite!
Seth Workheiser’s Social Media Escape Club is a lovely new newsletter / blog I’ve been digging into. Here’s a great example post how writing a newsletter shouldn’t beat you up. One of the things that kicked my backside to put this little issue together for you.
As always do say Hello!
Any new subscribers to my little newsletter, welcome. And if that’s you I’d love to hear a bit about yourself. What brought you here? What are you interested in? Drop me an email and say hello.
That’s it for now.
Be kind and live well!
