Southern Ontario has seen a lot of snow in January (a winter wonderland!) so the song penned by Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!” seemed appropriate to hum while walking in the forest of Sandbanks Provincial Park.
Refreshing,
Restoring.
Rejuvenating.
Bookend the winter scene with a dive trip to Bonaire ninety kilometres off the Venezuelan coast. It’s a small Dutch island famous for diving, cuisine, and calm blue waters. The itinerary includes two dives a day “under the sea” while enjoying a world replete with brightly coloured soft corals, spectacular tropical fish of all shapes and sizes, and most importantly a sanctuary for a myriad of Green turtles. These ancient reptiles (once endangered but now recovering) cruise up and down the reef or lodge themselves into a seafloor crook seeking a solitary siesta. High above mesmerizing Spotted Eagle Rays fly in formation along the barrier wall of the turbulent east coast waters.
The psalmist understands the beauty of creation and how all matter utters forth praise to its Creator. We hear about it in Psalm 96:12, “Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them. Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy” and also in Psalm 98:7, “Let the sea resound, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” The poet reminds us that creation sings its canticle of praise silently but forcefully through the vivacity of its awe inspiring existence (Psalm 19:1-4).
A take away:
The universe nudges us to get off our La-Z-Boy recliners and enjoy the beauty of our Maker’s story. Doing so our hearts, bodies and spirits are renewed as we move out, join in, and enter the bliss of God’s hymn for the ages.
