On October 8, I will host a book launch on Gadigal land (Sydney). I am delighted that three incisive thinkers will join me, Kaiya Aboagye, Keiran Stewart-Assheton and Shawna Tang. I am thankful to Ross Goodman-Brown for pushing me to organise it and for facilitating the space at Frontyard, and to the School of Humanities & Communication Arts at Western Sydney University for providing funding for refreshments.
I am asking every to buy a ticket (price range from $10 - $42, the latter including a copy of the book). But if you cannot afford any price, please just let me know. All monies raised will be split between the Al-Aqra family in Deir Al-Balah and Mob Strong General Fun, a mutual aid set up by Blackfullas for Blackfullas.
More details and tickets here. I hope to see you there!
I recently posted a list of things I cannot accept anymore and the most important was organising events with no fundraisers attached, which is why my book launch is - more importantly - a fundraiser! In the same spirit, last Tuesday, along with Tzedek Collective, I hosted a skills sharing session for those who’d like to sponsor a fundraiser for people in Gaza.
Since September 2024, I have been raising funds and sending them directly to the Al-Aqra family in Deir Al-Balah, Gaza. They are Iman and Ibrahim, Joury (8), Hamous (6), Marah (4) and Sanad (2). Here they are along with an example of a text exchanged between Iman and me.
I am sharing the recording of the session in which other people with experiences of raising money, Palestinian organiser and academic Ryan Al-Natour, organiser with Mountains for Palestine and academic, Jenna Condie, and local organiser Sophia Nasser also gave their invaluable input.
The situation is urgent and the people of Gaza need our help just to survive. As we explained during the seminar, there is no better way of ensuring that much needed funds reach the people directly than sending them directly. NGOs siphon money off and no aid is getting through. It is as simple as that. Here is a good article from Workshops4Gaza that explains further.
As we explained during the seminar, organising your own group of regular contributors – they can be friends, family, colleague, etc. – is not that difficult. And if you are based in australia, you can send money directly to Bank of Palestine accounts.
Please, if you feel you are in a position to take on one of these campaigns, I have 7 vetted families waiting for your assistance. Please fill in this form and I will contact you to walk you through the process!
