A different way to think about Subtext...

A year ago, a husband cheated on his wife. He said it was a mistake. After some rocky times they reconciled. Or something close to it.

One night they were watching TV before bed, just the two of them sitting in TV noise and TV light, and the husband said, I’ve been thinking about private time. Time set aside each week. Just for me.

The wife said, private time?

He said, people say in relationships you need time for yourself. That it won’t set itself aside. That it’s healthy.

She said, we’re apart from each other all day.

He said, Wednesdays. I was thinking Wednesdays. Just Wednesday afternoons. Evenings. Something like that.

She said, every Wednesday?

He said, it’s perfectly normal and reasonable. It’s healthy for us. It’s only healthy, hon.

She said, who is telling you this? Who is telling you to ask for space?

He said, I was reading up about it.

She said, you read up about asking for space? What?
