Last week I had a chance to speak with Will Tanner who runs The American Tribune to discuss the contribution of the Yamnaya Culture and the Indo-Europeans more generally to the founding of Western Civilization.

For 90 minutes we discuss such topics as:

  • Who were the Indo-Europeans, were they different from the Aryans?

    • Where did they originate?

    • When they called themselves free men, whom was that in contrast too?

  • What were their unique cultural attributes? What were their contributions to pastoralism, militarism, and the mannerbund-led conquest? Was there more than that?

    • Where does the chariot come into play with this? That is a feature of the pop culture image of them, but to what extent is it accurate?

    • You mentioned private property, what are your thoughts on their contributions thereon?

    • Were the mannerbund/koryos traders, raiders or conquerors?

  • Where did they conquer? Was this from Ireland to India? Over what time period was this happening?

    • What role did the search of tin and copper play?

  • What sort of early European world did they find as they conquered? Was it a hellish landscape like Catalhoyuk or as the longhouse you portray in your book?

    • To what degree were Neolithic societies matriarchal or patriarchal? How did this contrast with them?

  • Why were they more successful in creating worlds that were built around their excellence-oriented hierarchy, how did this vary across their domain of influence?

  • Did the Yamnaya survive the Bronze Age collapse, and how?

  • Did they live on anywhere into modernity?

We also spent some time discussing how Indo-European mythologies influenced the Classical world and how that plays into my novel, The Toll of Fortune (amazon), as well as how Yamnaya archetypes of rulership fed into our notions of monarchy and legitimate authority of rulers.
