PART II — The Rise and Fall of Mullah Akhtar Muhammad Mansour

After the death of Mullah Omar Mujahid, the long‑time leader of the Taliban, the movement entered one of the most turbulent succession crises in its history. In the immediate aftermath, Mullah Akhtar Muhammad Mansour, previously the group’s operations commander, emerged as the most powerful figure within the leadership structure.

From 2013 to July 2015, Mansour effectively acted as the de facto head of the organization, consolidating authority and reorganizing the movement’s command hierarchy. His rapid ascent, however, deeply unsettled senior figures such as Mullah Yaqub Mujahid (Omar’s son) and Mullah Abdul Manan Niazi, who viewed Mansour’s rise as both premature and politically engineered.
